Pipe stems and bowls are common artifacts found at historic period sites. They were very popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, but became less common in the 19th century as Temperance Movement sought to stamp out evils such as smoking and drinking. Oddly enough, in the 17th century, smoking a pipe was referred to as “drinking tobacco”.
