This artifact was found in one of our Intensive Survey test pits out in one of the farm pastures where the donkeys and Highland cattle graze. It is a net sinker and probably dates to the Late Archaic Period ca. 3700 years ago. A number of these weights would have been tied to the bottom of a long tidal net stretched across the mouth of Chase Garden Creek. It would have caught fish either going in, or more commonly, coming out of the creek with the tide. The Late Archaic is the period when we see the first evidence of the use of specific equipment to catch fish.
