James Morley , an English potter, was sued in 1685 by Dwight, another potter, began making a smooth brown stoneware with a glossy surface in the form of mugs, bowls, pitchers and double handled loving cups. While these wares were made initially in Nottingham, they were also produced throughout the 18th century in Burslem and other locations in Staffordshire and Derbyshire as well as Swinton in Yorkshire. Products of Nottingham are readily identifiable by a thin white to gray line separating the body and the glaze. The vessel form was a mug.
