This fragment of overglaze hand painted porcelain tea cup is the only piece of porcelain found at the site. Porcelain was just about the most expensive ceramic one could buy in the 17th and 18th century. The recovery of one porcelain tea cup means that it is quite likely that the Taylors probably only owned one or maybe two porcelain tea cup and saucer sets and that these were only used on special occasions, for guests, or just for the use of the matriarch and patriarch of the family. The amount of porcelain owned by a household is a good indicator of the family’s status. The presence of a little porcelain indicates that the Taylors were probably middling class.
